Vets at loss

Looking after the health and welfare of your Schnauzer can be a full time job. You will find information on neutering, spaying, vaccinations, vet visits, upset tummies, Schnauzer bumps and much more here. Ask a question and someone will have had a similar experience. We also appreciate updates on how your Schnauzer is recuperating. A separate section is dedicated to our older Schnauzers.

Vets at loss

Post by Bez2006 »

Hi advice please Bella my six year MS
was sick Sat night x2 and wasn,t herself took her to the vet Sunday morning and they kept her in - she hasn’t,t been sick since Sunday afternoon but really isn,t herself and is uncomfortable - she has no interest in food - they’ve taken blood tests and nothing and remarkable is a liver test everything to come back normal. Urine test showed protein and white cells so they started her on antinotices ( she due to come into season in about two weeks so thought that might be the cause of protein etc) she came home Tuesday night - she had her bowels open but it was very watery and ate a little bit of chicken but the next day when I took her to be reviewed she’s was in a lot of discomfort again- she still in.. They did a ultrasound and thought there was a problem with her bowel and did a laparotomy-all their organs are fine .they,ve tested for Addison’s which is clear second that test showed a white cell count was slightly up .The vet’s are at a loss find a reason why she,s unwell. The vets going to have chat / recur her to a refusal centre to see if they can shed any light on the problem.sorry this I’ds such a long post but just wondered if you had any ideas? Thank you xxxx

Beryl, how awful for you both. Could she have swallowed something and got an intermittent blockage or would the work done so far have picked that up. The symptoms sounds like a liver/pancreas problem but as they are a negative that is strange. Really hope that Bella gets well again soon. Come on Bella...

Hi..I hope this is a one off gastritis ,maybe caused by the heat wave..id keep her well hydrated, observe her stools.take her temp each day..( if it rises above 38 c ,straight to vets)if she won't eat I'd put hills a/ d puree into her mouth so she keeps something in her system..if she refuses this, she needs to go on a drip for nutrients at the vet.
If it's a gastritis,a good probiotic will help.. I'd want her faeces tested too...costs so little and could give you some answers.
Some questions..
Has she been a healthy dog to date?
Has she has diarrhea?
Is her vomit blood stained?
Is she passing a stool?
Are you sure she has not swallowed a foreign object?

It's all a bit vague..so hopefully you will have some answers soon.

I hope you can get a positive diagnosis soon. It is difficult to speculate too much without knowing a full history of Bella recently, although, as Jo says, the heat (if you are experiencing the very hot weather at present) could be at least a contributory factor. Dogs do not cope well with high temperatures especially if they are not accustomed to it and , if Bella is due a season, her body temperature may be up too. Vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy and discomfort can all be signs of overheating.
Some useful tips from Jo above and, hopefully a referral to a specialist may give you an accurate diagnosis and help get Bella back to full health very soon.

Hi Everyone ,
Thank you so much for your reply’s xxx. She a little improved and has now been referred to a animal hospital as a in patient. They,ve re scanned her and the Abnormal section of bowel can still be seen on the ultrasound. She is on IV fluids analgesics and antiemetics to keep her comfortable they plan to re-scan on Monday and see if there are any changes -The vets suggest there might be four possible causes- A foreign body cancer (unlikely) ,she’s eaten something that’s damaged part of her bowel or it could be something like IBS. Her blood results remaine unremarkable. She hasn’t been sick for nearly a week ( semi digested food ,no blood) .she hasn’t eaten for 8 day apart from a little chicken when she came home for the night(Tuesday night). She hasn’t,t had her bowels open apart from Tuesday night and to be honest it was so watery that it was impossible to collect a sample 😞. She’s been a inpatient since last Sunday at our local vet and then she was refurrred to the hospital where is is at the moment. Previous to this she has always been a very healthy girl 😊. She was a bit brighter on Friday and even barked at the vet 👍😁 .I,m going to see her tomorrow Finger crossed she better.
Thank so much for your good wishes and thoughts xxxx Bella with a fav ball photo

Great news Beryl. I know how much a poorly dog brings the mood of the house down. It's always lovely to see them get better :)
