Miniature schnauzer puppy with a house cat?
Hello,
I’m looking to get a miniature schnauzer puppy in the near future. However, I currently own a one year old house cat. Our cat is quite timid but can deal with dogs (we bring him to the in laws occasionally and he coexists with their sproodle - even after a brief chase the first time they met!). However, are mini schnauzers capable of coexisting with cats? I feel like any dog if socialised early enough should be able to but I’ve heard a lot about their prey drive for smaller animals...
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Chris and welcome to the Forum
There should be no problem introducing a miniature schnauzer puppy to a cat. Although we no longer have cats, for many years we had first one cat and then two others living perfectly well with our mini schnauzers. We even had guinea pigs at the same time as our minis and they were fine too. Most dogs will regard other pets that live in the same household as part of the family even if they behave quite differently to others of those species outside of the home environment.
Here is one of many photos we have from over the years of our mini schnauzers with various of our cats. This is Magic, the mini with Lace, the cat:

Hi I have seen lots of lovely photos on other schnauzer facebook groups of schnauzers and cats. Good luck.

Thank you Mike
Sadly we no longer have Lace but she really loved our mini schnauzers from the time she and her sister first came to live with us, years before Magic was born:

Oh bless them, look at that picture, both sitting next to one another on someones lap. Just goes to show I guess that they can get on, contrary to what you hear about dogs and cats

My Gino will bark if he’s sees our neighbours cats (s) he would also chase it if he had the opportunity but when we go to visit or stay over with our friends who have a cat Gino he just seems to accept it in their house we can’t believe it.

Christine, lovely photos, Gino seems such a calm, well mannered little schnauzer. Otto now will spot a cat but leave it alone and move past without a problem unless they startle him. I do love Gino's raincoat, what make is that?

Julie thanks, yes that’s Gino with his raincoat it’s from www.doggiecoats.co.uk I like it as it keeps his tummy dry. He was at Jennifer on Tuesday for groom so looking handsome again. I bought him a Fleece similar to Equafleeces, it’s made by Trixie. It was in the pet section of the garden centre that we went to while he was with Jennifer. I really need to stop buying clothing for him as I could open a shop.
