Giant Schnauzer food quantity

Post by ChrisM72 »

Hi there

New to the forum and I know this topic has been discussed so apologies if repeating. Ziggy is a 5 month old P&S Giant, 27kg. We feed him raw food and his is currently on 1500g + two chicken wings per day. The general consensus is 6% of their body weight. Can anyone verify if this is accurate and at what age should it be reduced?

Many thanks

Hi Chris and welcome to the Forum :-)

Amounts of food do vary between individual dogs (even siblings from the same litter) so guidelines of weight are only approximations and you may need to adjust if you think Ziggy is not gaining weight appropriately or if he is getting too heavy. There is a link here to feeding raw food to puppies with a chart showing amounts and when to transition to different amounts which may help although this is from a particular brand of raw dog food so may not be exactly the same if you are DIY feeding:

You may also find these links helpful:

With our dogs which are raw fed from weaning, I have used a rough rule of feeding the puppies (once they are fully weaned) pretty much the same amount I give to the adult dogs (3% of ideal adult weight) and find this tends to work out very close to the percentage body weight guide but avoiding tricky calculations. The amount of food equivalent to 8-10% of the little pups' weight diminishes naturally as they grow to 6%, 4% , 3%. So, if you know how much Ziggy is expected to weigh as an adult, you could feed him that amount spread over several meals and just reduce the number of meals (not the quantity of food) as he matures. We feed our small dogs three meals a day until 6-9 months old and then reduce to two but that may not be appropriate for a giant breed (?).
