Crate location
Hi,
We are looking forward to getting our first family dog in a couple of weeks. He will be a black Miniature Schnauzer and the name is still an active discussion! We have been reading the 'Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy' book and it suggests placing the crate in your own bedroom for the first few nights. Despite extensive reading of forums and speaking to other dog owners I have not heard of this method being used. Has anyone tried this? How did it work out?
Thanks,
Dan

Re: Crate location
Welcome to the Forum Dan and great news re your new miniature schnauzer
Certainly some people do find that by placing the crate in the bedroom for the first nights after the puppy comes home, it can make it less stressful for both puppy and the rest of the family. Much may depend on whether or not your prospective puppy has been introduced to sleeping alone in a crate before you bring him home and if he is used to sleeping e.g. in the kitchen. If this has happened, you may find your puppy will continue to settle just fine in whichever room you have decided he will sleep in at night. However, if he is not used to this, or in any event, if he is anxious at the outset in a new home at night, he may cry and / or during the night he may cry to go out to toilet if he cannot hold on all night. Some people prefer to have the crate close by as a reassurance to the puppy and to know when he needs to be taken out or to replace his pee pad if he has wet or poo' d (depending on how you want to manage over night toilet needs). It can often be better to try and encourage a puppy to hold on by not taking him out at night in case it becomes something the puppy expects but this is something you may want to think about when you have him home.
You can gradually move the crate, further from your bedroom as your puppy becomes relaxed and settled at night unless you decide to keep him sleeping in the bedroom long term. I would recommend speaking to your puppy's breeder before you collect him to find out what if any crate training is going to be done before he leaves their home as this may also help you to decide what to do.
It is worth thinking through how you want to manage the early days and weeks for your new puppy as it is almost always a stressful if enjoyable time for you all and trying to minimise the stress by whatever means is best for you and for your pup is a good idea

Re: Crate location
My boy will be 3yrs old in May, he has been in our bedroom since we brought him home at 8 weeks. He’s been in his crate since his first day with us. He went all night without doing the toilet in his crate at 8 weeks have to say he still loves his crate at bedtime, would love him to sleep in his bed at the side of our bed like our last girl did but he seems to prefer his crate which is good for us as when we go away he is always with us so it means he is happy in his safe place.
Our last girl hated her crate but then we left her alone in the kitchen on her first day home, she never took to the crate but she was happy to sleep in her bed in our bedroom but when we went away she wasn’t happy at all being left in a strange place.

Re: Crate location
So it sounds like it can work if it is needed. Long term he won't be staying in the bedroom so perhaps we'll use it as a last resort if he is upset!

Re: Crate location
Yeah we said that when we got our first dog Barney He never left the bedroom and slept in his crate. We didnt lock the door after a couple of years but his crate was still first choice for sleeping. Jasper has been in a crate in our room since we got him. Not even spoken about moving him out your views change

Re: Crate location
Your views change... yes they certainly do. Oscar started in the kitchen in a play pen, then we removed the play pen, then moved him onto the bedroom landing with a child gate on the bedroom door, then somehow, still not sure how it happened, he ended up on the bed and sometimes we would find him in the bed when we woke up.. Then in his later years he was in a soft crate on the bed because I was scared he would fall off..... Otto started in the kitchen in a play pen, then we removed the play pen, then the play pen got moved into our bedroom and that's where we are at. He is not coming on the bed. y

we also need a schnauzer.

Re: Crate location
It's working well so far in the bedroom and he has slept through the last two nights. He is 11 weeks old tomorrow.

Re: Crate location
They want to be close to you. Personally I wouldn’t want my dog to sleep downstairs what if they needed you during the night you wouldn’t hear them .
