Want to see wheaten colour ?

Post by Dawnspell »

Although Barney always looks pure white in photos he isn't. It's been mentioned on the forum before that when a white is stripped the wire hair can be banded wheaten and white. Barney has been gradually going darker down his back as he's got older and stripped out more. So I thought I would try to take some photos for anybody that's interested. I know lots of people haven't seen a white schnauzer so seeing a white stripped schnauzer is probably quite rare. He still came out looking a lot whiter than he is, especially where his back was bent the white lower band took over, but I've tried :))

That's a wider band of wheaten than I thought, it will be interesting to see what Milo's looks like once I've clipped him, we hope he grows up to be as handsome as gorgeous Barney, maybe not quite so maxi though! :)

Its a lot more than I was expecting after reading about it. It will be interesting with Milo as Barney has some wheaten coloured fluff on his head so maybe Milo will retain some of his colour when clipped. :)

Thanks for the pictures of Barney's stripe. I find it especially interesting as Barney is a couple of months older than Casper so I can guage a little what he is going to be like. Casper's stripe starts at the top of his head but isn't as thick as Barney's yet. Barney is absolutely beautiful by the way :x

We haven't stripped Casper as I'm not sure he'd stay still but he still has a definite stripe which is getting more golden. I didn't know the whites had a stripe until I read about Barney's a few months ago. Casper's stripe started showing a few weeks later.

Barneys started coming through at around 9 weeks. His hasn't spread any further over his body over the last 2 mths I'd say, but it has got a lot darker. I posted a thread asking in general if banding changed with age, but no definitive answer.
That's interesting about Casper. Is it the wire that's left or undercoat that's coloured?

I believe it's in Casper's undercoat as it's most noticeable when his fur is short.

He’s completely white with a Wheaton straight from his head to his tail. How does that happen?
