Puppy shopping list

Post by LunasCharley »

Hi all,

We are due to collect the lovely Luna (11 weeks, mini S) on 25th Feb. I have a big list of things to get for her and was wondering if anyone has any specific recommendations on the below please, based on what your puppy enjoys?
  • Toys
    Coat/jacket?
    Collar/harness
    Lead (extendable and short)
    Clipper for body hair
    Basket/crate
Thanks,
Charley

Hi Charley and welcome to the Forum :)

Exciting times ahead with Luna!

I would not recommend an extending lead as these can be quite dangerous and are not helpful in lead training a puppy. If you want Luna to have more freedom than on a short lead, use a long trailing line which you can catch hold of if she goes too far ahead. There are also many enclosed dog fields now which can be hired for 30 minutes for a dog to have free roaming in a safe environment. In the early days though I would only recommend letting her run free when she is in your home environment - garden space and concentrate on lead training with a short lead.

You can spend a fortune on dog toys and I know the temptation well! However puppies (and adult dogs) love all kinds of things that cost little or nothing to buy. Cardboard boxes, empty toilet rolls, empty flower pots, old socks etc. so don’t feel you have to spend a lot to give her fun things to interact with.

Chew items are a must. While puppies are going through teething they can be manic nipping and biting and you do need to have plenty of safe chew items to help the teething process and to divert them when they need to chew. Yak sticks when she is a little older; antlers; Anco Roots chews:

There are more items on this link to give you an idea of some good chews although you may need to check the age at which they can be introduced:

The above are just a guide as there are other brands and many places where these can be purchased online or in shops.

A crate is important and it could be worthwhile also getting a playpen or room divider so that you can let Luna have rest time safely when you are not able to watch her without necessarily always putting her into the crate. An area with toys, chews and a bed for daytime resting can be very important as you cannot always be watching her and puppies are always going to get up to mischief if left to their own devices :)) She will need plenty of rest time when she first arrives in between play sessions.

Good luck and have fun. These early months with a puppy fly past and they are very special times :)

While they do need a collar and harness don't go spending a fortune on them. They grow so quick that you may need a couple or more different ones before fully grown. Same with any coat.

Have you considered whether you are hand stripping or clipping. Many on the forum have chosen to hand strip rather than clipping. You will find many threads to read through.

Shampoo, brush and comb
Enzymatic cleaner for cleaning up after any accidents inside. It removes the odour so puppy is less likely to go on the same spot.
Snugglesafe heat pad. Not an essential but Jasper still loves his in his crate when it's chilly and they are safe for puppies.

As Leigh says have fun they don't stay puppies for long

gosh you must be so excited, I remember puppy shopping for my boy after I lost my precious girl. As wanted blue lead, blue bed, blanket etc. I would certainly recommend a crate, my last girl wouldn't tolerate but my boy went in no bother. On his first night home we just popped him in the crate which was in our bedroom, & we could not believe that he slept all night, yes all night without doing the toilet. but make sure when you take them out of the crate that you carry straight out to the garden for the toilet. Straight out when they wake up & after eating. Also take out to the garden every couple of hours, my boy was house trained within a couple of weeks with only 6 accidents in the house which was hubby's fault when he was in charge when I was out. I would also recommend taking them with you to help socialise. I carried my boy until he had his jabs out to the local swing park, round the area that I would be walking him, meeting neighbours & kids on way to school etc. Took him to the local pet shop out in the car. This helped so much, got him used to traffic noise etc too. I'm not boasting but I have a super boy who just takes everying in his stride, he still likes to sleep in his crate at bedtime, & its suits us as it means that when we take him to hotels on holiday he is happy in his crate & can be left in a hotel room unlike our last girl. Socialisation is very important to them in the early days. I would also say that my boy is not a ''barker'' which they can be also my girl wasn't either, having my girl gave me so so much experience that I had to share with my boy. I also let him off the lead (at 12 wks) in a safe place after he was inoculated for recall training & again it was the best thing I did, as his recall is perfect unlike my last girl who would disappear on walks & only come back in her own time.
Enjoy everyday with your puppy, as they grow up so fast my boy will be 6yrs old this year
