Re: rehome micro chip
If you are re-homing through a rescue organisation or a breed club re-home they will do the work for you. If it is through a private re-home, the current ‘keeper’ should help you with the transfer. You should not really re-register a microchip on a dog without it being confirmed by the current ‘keeper’ that it is legally moving to a new home.
Just to add to this, if you are in the U.K. and if the previous owner / breed rescue / re-homing centre are not going to fulfil their obligations regarding assisting with the transfer of the microchip into your name, you should be able to do so by contacting the microchipping company yourself but you will have to know which database the microchip is registered with as there are several different ones.
The legal requirement in England:
Change of keeper
8.—(1) From 6th April 2016, where a dog is transferred to a new keeper, the new keeper must, unless the previous keeper has already done so, record their full name, address and contact telephone number (if any) and any change in the dog’s name with the database on which the dog’s details are recorded pursuant to regulation 3(5)(b).
