Got the results today, there was a positive result in one of the testing groups which happened to be the 'indoor group' i.e. things in the home. The lab is now doing more detailed testing within this group and hopefully in one weeks time we will know what is causing Jake's problems.

We have noticed an improvement in Jake since the vet started him on one cod liver oil capsule a day and also since using the prescribed shampoo on his paws. He is definately not chewing as frantically as before.

Will do an update when we get the final test results.

Good Luck Karen, hope they get to the bottom of this...sounds like Jake is getting some ease, and am sure its a little less worrying for you.

Know this is an old post, but wondering if there is any update? Our boy is chewing his paws so much they bleed. We think it's dietary after a change in food.
Wife on way to vet now, but would love to know if anyone has resolved this here..

There are a number of reasons for paw biting which may be diet related - not just change of diet but lack of certain nutrients - but the behaviour could also be due to pain. The pain could be somewhere else in his body but the paw chewing is either a distraction technique (like humans biting their nails) or could be that the pain is being felt there although originates elsewhere. Hopefully the vet will be able to give a certain diagnosis which will make it easier for you to resolve the issue. The problem with some behaviours is that they can also become a habit even though the original cause has been dealt with but if he is actually making his paws bleed it does sound quite bad and must be really upsetting for you too.

Omega 3 oils usually derived from marine sources can often be useful for a range of issues in dogs such as allergies, reducing inflammation and joint health. You can buy supplements but adding some dried sprats for dogs to your mini’s food or given as a treat may also help. If you are in the U.K. there are many companies who sell dried sprats and our dogs love them. This is one link but there are quite a few others if you search online;~

Our has just had this problem, chewing feet and excessive licking, saliva turning the fur orange and a pinkish tinge to her underbelly where she was scratching and licking.

We tried a medicated anti-fungal/anti bacterial shampoo (malaseb) and it's cleared it up, so probably a yeast infection due to some sort of environmental allergy (summer in Australia so lots of grass seeds and bitey ants etc). We also got some anti-itch medication from the vet to try and prevent a recurrence before the skin is properly healed, that worked a treat.
