I have 2 black standards

Don't mean to argue but are you sure they're purebread standards? Standards ONLY come in Salt & Pepper, no other color. It's the base of the breed. Minis, who people often confuse as standards, come in all black, S&P, black and silver and all white (often viewed as a defect by breeders), while giants come in all black and S&P (often referred to a P&S with giants).

Are you sure about that on the standards? I saw a standard once which was pure black and the owner, who I believe was a breeder of them, confidently told me that her dog had Russian lineage......that is the only black standard I have ever seen and it was an absolutely beautiful specimen.

There are two standard schnauzers that live in a house I pass by on one of my usual walks - both all black.

I just looked at the KC website for the breed standard and they recognise two colours: P&S and black.

The FCI (Europe) also recognise black as an acceptable colour variety for the (standard) schnauzer and dogs of this colour are bred and exhibited at shows worldwide:

How far back historically this colour goes may be debatable but it is now accepted by Kennel Clubs in the UK, USA and Europe.

Yes they are definitely pure BLACK standard schnauzers and are bred by a very reputable breeder who has shown at Crufts.

I had a S/P Standard Schnauzer for 15 years and he was such an important member of the family. They very much are "hounds" and are willful buggers. Stubborn and would continually test me. So they are not for the soft hearted - you have to create boundaries and then reinforce them.
They are a medium size dog but with a big dog bark and personality.
he was never allowed on anythign other than the floor - elevating a Standard Schnauzer to a sofa or bed is asking for a whole load of trouble. they are quite aloof and nonchalant with strangers and are definitely not "cuddly dogs" for new people. Mine hated being picked up and would just give me a disdainful look.
However, they are incredibly tolerant of family / children etc.
If you train them well they are fantastic dogs. I was able to brush my dog's teeth with an electric toothbrush. he wasn't best pleased but he let me do it.
similarly bath / shower time was not a favourite - but he let me.
they will obey their owners but it's a relationship based on boundaries and trust.

They're rediculously intelligent and have oodles of personality - but can be aloof and even huff at you and then trot away with a 'im not bothered' look.
The standard schnauzer is not for everyone (and not recommended as your first dog) - but once you've had one, they've spoilt you for most other dogs.

Hi, I have a miniature and have 5 over the last 25+ yrs 3 have passed my ex has the 6yr girl and I have a 6 month boy, I would just like to say I agree with all you have said, at the moment mine has anxiety issues which I’m trying to train him out of by going out for short times i’m not making a big thing about going out he seems to gradually be getting the idea of it but it is a slow progress because I’m on my own and he is with me all the time so it makes it a bit difficult for him. He’s getting there. I know one thing for sure I wouldn’t want to be without him the most wonderful dogs, that I can think of .
