The Giant Schnauzer is an example of working breed of dog and has a dense, coarse coat that protects them against the elements and vermin. The Giant Schnauzer is the largest of the three breeds.

toffsmum wrote:Well yes black and silver to black and silver is the best way to produced black and silver only, but does not explain the mixed litters of black and silver, black and p/s that is produced from a black and p/s mating.
Surely it depend on the genes carried not just in the parents, but also grandparents etc etc.
Am I right in Europe they never mix the colour, also they show the colours separatley. :-)
In american they have alsorts of mixed up colour!!!!!!!!

Have only ever seen Black and S/P, where has the B/S gene come from?
If it's in giants surely it's in standards as well??

Chris, have a look at the link I put up on the last page.

Also

http://www.giantschnauzer.org/Volition/ ... llery.html

where you can see a fawn coloured giant. This was from 2 blacks, the whole litter was fawn. They repeated the mating but never bred on from them or the parents again.

Thank goodness. They followed the mantra that we leave the breed enhanced from how we found it, unless we're going to go down the reprehensible road of designer doggies. The "standard" is there for a reason.

Some really interesting pictures here! The fawn one looks like a wheaten terrier to me.

Love the Black and silver Giant!

Just back from Switzerland - there was a GS police dog and 2 others in the village - quite light boned and all with tails - so lovely to see them working happily.

Thank Snazy,

Couldn't open first link.

They look lovely, but how have they achieved these colours?

If both Mini's and Gaint's have come from Standards, surley standards must carry these colours????

Or is it was they used to from the standard to create Mini's and Giants??

I did once hear someone say that there have occasionally been b/s standards born. But then the giants and minis have been mixed with other breeds to produce them and the b/s is just a slightly altered black and tan which is a common colouration in a lot of germanic breeds, among others.
