Dangerous Foods and Plants
Re: thought this would be useful
i was always led to believe garlic is ok but knew onions were toxic but i believe garlic is part of the onion family isn't it? but then perhaps when making treats for dogs the amount of garlic used would perhaps be quite minimal?
Re: thought this would be useful
I to always thought garlic was okay for dogs, having had various types of dogs frm a cairn terrier to greyhounds and everything in btwn, but Izzie is my 1st schnauzer, i so cannot wait, any tips on what puppy foods you guys use as the breeder just using tinned food, i always had my previous dogs on dry food. (thanks)

Cassiesmum - Izzie to be - when I picked up Suzi from the breeder, she gave me Pedigree dried puppy obviously. But then she started to be fussy and it was trial and errror trying all sorts from Bakers puppy, to Pedigree puppy pouches but she out grew that thankgoodness and we are now on Burns dried which comes in various variety from Chicken, Lamb and Fish I'm no so keen on the fish because of the fishy smell but do give in and give it too her for a change. We give her plenty vegetables from carrot, brussel sprouts to broccoli and she takes these raw or cooked and loves them.

I feed Bozita dry which i am very happy with, other good brands are Burns, James wellbeloved, Arden Grange or Royal Canin. some here believe Barf feeding is best but you'll have to go in that section for info as i know nothing about that. what ever food you decide to use stick to it, don't let your dog be fussy and you should be fine.

Re: thought this would be useful
I recently started using Orijen dry food, and I am really impressed. Cara has never eaten all her food in one go - she prefers to pick throughout the day and although this hasn't changed, when I get her days worth of food out of the bin (I keep it in a plastci bin) she is now much more excited, she obviously enjoys it more, her coat is looking shinier, her teeth are getting whiter and her stools are more consistent.
Cara and Mo, two black mini's and Molly a black & white Heinz 57 all served by Elaine, the cook, poop picker, and chief toy thrower.

Re: thought this would be useful
Onions & Garlic contain N-Propyldisulfid (I don't know what it's called in english), which causes life threatening anaemia if fed in large doses on a regular basis. So, obviously the amount used in manufactured tabs for dogs can't be that high.
Please don't forget:
Many natural herbs, plants etc. which are known as poisenous are also used in medicines, because they are also beneficial to our health! (ok)

Michelle, who reckons all dogs should have their meat and eat it...!

Re: thought this would be useful
So is garlic and fenugreek tablets ok to give daily (confused)
Re: thought this would be useful
i would say if it was a specialist dog supplement then i would guess so but if it is one of the ones from holland and barratt or something it is probably a far higher dosage and may not be wise but i couldn't give you a correct answer as i am not sure.
