Advice please

The Miniature Schnauzer is a smallest dog in the Schnauzer breed and originated in the mid-to-late 19th Century from Germany. The Miniature Schnauzer is a cross between the Standard Schnauzer and other smaller breeds such as the Poodle. A miniature Schnauzer is a spunky, but aloof dog who does things their own way. They tend to be good guard dogs without the tendency to bite.

Advice please

Post by Stuart1969 » 09 May 2018, 12:02

Hi All
Darcie is now 4 months old and has been an absolute dream and is the perfect therapy dog for my daughter, we gave her a worming tablet 2 days ago and the following morning we found some sick in her cage and she has been off her food since. She is not her normal exciteable self, but she is drinking and will still eat a treat! but she is not eating her food though.
I have heard that they can sometimes just go off their food for a couple of days but there is a definite change in her behaviour in that she is subdued and more sleepy then normal.
Any thoughts or are we just being a bit over cautious?

Hi Stuart, it's always worrying when your dog goes off its food, especially when they're so young. This won't be her first worming tablet. Have you continued to use they same as previously and was there any reaction then?

What a georgeous little puppy by the way.

What was the tablet you have used? The National Office of Animal Health website has data sheets for veterinary medications which should list known side effects. There are some anti-parasite medications that are being monitored currently by the European Medicines Agency due to concern over the number of bad reactions / fatalities from using them.

In any event you should report to your vet if Darcie is suffering a possible adverse reaction to the tablet. I hope she recovers very soon to her usual self.

HI, my bet is her adult teeth are coming in and causing her to not eat...
At four to five months the pup will shed her premolars and then the next month, her molars,,,
Her adult pre molars and molars will be erupting and causing her discomfort...
Some dogs sail through this ,others have more pain...some have a temperature,etc..
I would scald her kibble with boiling water for two minutes so it is softer.
You could add some soft boiled food if she's not eating as much..chicken,or rabbit etc..or sardines..
See vet if this continues..he may prescribe a puppy aspirin..there are liquid drops for pups that are not human aspirin,so don't use over the counter for this..
Get the pup something to chew on..even a knotted strip of denim ,soaked in water and frozen will give the pups gums relief.
A large frozen carrot, monitored when she is chewing etc..
I hope she is feeling better soon...she's a beautiful puppy!
