Hi we get our miniature schnauzer puppy next month. We are first time dog owners so it’s all going to be a huge learning curve!

I haven’t found a way to post questions yet and I have so many! We’ll be bringing our new 11 week pup home in July and we are starting to gather the things we will need (so many things!). Bought a collar and harness today in a small size but wondering if anyone can confirm roughly what size we’d need. Have to take the pup on a boat home so want to make sure we have a tight grip of her collar whilst holding her!

Do have a read through the topics regarding puppies in the Board Index as there is lots of useful information there on a range of different subjects re caring for and training a new puppy.

Puppies do come in different sizes - you are probably best advised to chat with your puppy's breeder regarding many of the initial needs such as harness size as s/he will know exactly what your puppy's dimensions are and will be by 11 weeks. If you have already invested in a harness, it might be better to wait until much nearer the collection time and check with the breeder then as to the puppy's exact measurements. I would suggest that, if you are going on public transport ( boat) with your pup, you would be best to get a pet carrier which will keep her safer than just holding her in your arms and also means she will be able to settle and rest for at least part of her journey home. A miniature schnauzer puppy will probably be smaller than a full grown cat so even a cat carrier may be sufficient.

The hard sided ones would probably be better than a soft crate for travelling as they are more stable and protective but as long as it is sturdy and recommended for travel any style should be OK.

We flew from Guernsey to Blackpool to pick up our pup at 12 weeks and a cat carrier is more than big enough to bring your pup home. You may be able to borrow/rent one from your vet if you pre register your pup or a local pet store.

Welcome to the forum you won't regret getting a MS they are super dogs. Gino is our second & we brought him home at 8weeks see him in the photo below. Enjoy as they grow so fast our Gino is now 13 mths x

It might be a good idea to check with the boat company. I know our ferry company only allows dogs to travel in a car or if a foot passenger they have to be in a crate of some sort, not allowed on knees in passenger area.

No, we got a private pilot to fly us up to Squire's Gate. We paid for the fuel and also had to pay for each hour (or part ) the plane was in the air. It cost about £1100 !!

That said, I know of a couple of schnauzers brought in to Guernsey from Exeter airport. The 2 families split the cost of the fuel costs and landing fees - £85 each!

There are quite a few people in Guernsey who will fly you to the UK and pick up a puppy who want to keep up their flight time for their pilot's licence. The price is usually cheaper than taking the ferry if you have a breeder near the south coast and stay away from Bristol and Southampton as their landing fees are high to discourage the use of small planes.

Our breeder was in Poulton, about 8 miles from Blackpool, so we had a 3.5 hour flight each way to face rather than 30 minutes or so to Exeter.

I've heard of people doing that but never known the cost. Sounds like a lot more convenient and fun than the hassle of the "fast" ferry and as you say not much difference to ferry fares, plus car fuel costs, time taken and other expenses

How exciting!!!! All three of my dogs were different sizes, one had to have a kitten collar he was so small!!!!!

My tip would be get one with a bell!!! You’ll be amazed how tiny they are and how they love to chase feet

Definitely think about a dog/car carrier for the journey home as it will be a lovely safe space for them, especially if you get something scented for them for the breeder. We had a baby blanket and toys from the last one which he still has now!
