Re: Edie's grooming journey begins
I've been looking through old photos. Barney was 6-7 months old before he started looking "tidy". Wouldn't say quite a swan but not scruffy puppy

Re: Edie's grooming journey begins
Edie is 6 months old now. She still can't make up her mind whether she's going to allow her whole jacket to turn pepper and salt and is stubbornly hanging on to quite a bit of solid black on her back.
She's very good about having her upper legs stripped and isn't concerned about her head or ears either. She's not a big fan of having her throat and chest stripped so I cheat here and after carding it will use clippers on her throat and thinning scissors on her chest.
I've a bit more to pull off her neck but I'd already taken her to her limit and I'd rather the whole process was pleasant (or at least tolerable) for her.

Re: Edie's grooming journey begins
Here's Edie at 7 months, one month on from previous picture.
She's quite gangly and still holds on to her black jacket. Her leg furnishings are still threadbare but I know these will develop. She allows me to strip her head and ears with no fuss and you can see that I strip her back legs through the thighs and almost down to the hock. Should I go further here or blend it in?
With the front legs I need to take some more off her shoulders but what do I do at the elbow? There always seems to be more hair here than anywhere else and stripping doesn't seem to take it all out. Do I use thinning scissors here after I strip as much off as possible?
Thanks

Re: Edie's grooming journey begins
Sam, I think she looks great and you are doing a tremendous job of stripping and carding. I can't do the thigh on Otto like you do, he doesn't like it and I get a stare if I even try.
As has been said, she will fill out. With a dog that does have longer legs with little furnishings, it sometimes helps to keep the skirt a little longer. It should start level with the elbow at the front and then taper up at an angle to the thigh furnishings but not too sharp as skirt can look "tucked in". It does have a dramatic effect when you play with the length making a shorter stockier dog look taller if kept short and visa versa. As for the leg furnishings, I don't know whether you ever blow dry their coats but if you blow dry up the leg so the hair puffs out as much as possible and slicker the hair out at 90 degrees from leg and then use thinning scissors down the leg to keep the leg hair straight like a cylinder and take the ends off you will find it does look thicker and will get thicker.
I wouldn't go any further down the hock/leg but I would blend in with thinners. Again flick the hair out and blend. Comb the hair at the back of the hock out and cut down straight at 90 degree angle at a length of approx 2 inches long. Again. you can play around with the length to extenuate the angle of the hock if you like.
At shoulders strip as far down as you need to to keep the furnishings at the top of the leg in place otherwise the top of the furnishings stick out. At the elbow as I said above best thing is to comb hair out at back and trim cut straight down. If hair is really thick at elbows get your thinners in there to remove a bit. Do a bit at a time because if you remove too much it can create a bit of a hole, the hair should look full at the top. I have the same problem Otto has a lot of hair on his legs and elbow particularly, I thin it a bit to make it easier to groom.
That is what I do but as I said, she looks fab Sam (as does Rosie of course just in case she is reading this too )

Re: Edie's grooming journey begins
Edie will be 9 months old on Wednesday. Today she had her eyebrows trimmed for the first time and had the usual coat roll and card. I also managed to strip the top of her head and she had no objections to that at all.

Re: Edie's grooming journey begins
Thanks Leigh, I'm yet to tackle her beard though as you can see. My plan is to comb it out then clip it against the direction of growth (into the beard) to a line running from the outer corner of her eye to a finger's width behind the corner of her mouth.
Would this be right?

Re: Edie's grooming journey begins
Hi Sam, sorry for the late reply. Judith is the grooming expert in our house so wanted to check with her first
You may be better using scissors rather than clippers near the eyes to avoid taking the hair too close and giving a "pinched" look to Edie's face but your plan is pretty much as it should be. There is a diagram on this link which may help too:

Hi Leigh,
I'm a child from the 1960's so, unlike the current generation of children, don't have the expectation of an instant response

Re: Edie's grooming journey begins
I think spring has brought the growing season to Edie's undercoat with it. This is just 10 minutes of carding that was last done 4 days ago!

Re: Edie's grooming journey begins
It is amazing how quickly the undercoat can build up at times. Edie is looking good and probably feeling much more comfortable without all that "fluff"

It always amazes me how much hair there is when carding and stripping, yet theres never any around the house in between grooming.

We still have the stubborn dark patch on her back, she still has a puppy look around her muzzle but her P&S wire coat is finally beginning to look good.
