Searching for Miniature Schnauzer Puppy

Post by LSmith » 07 May 2020, 14:28

Hi everyone,

I would love some advice please. We are desperately seeking a miniature Schnauzer puppy to add to our family. We are first time dog owners but have lots of love and attention to give. We are based in Surrey. Any tips or info people can give to point us in the right direction would be fab. We have tried the kennel club but haven't had much luck yet with breeders getting back to us.

Hi Linda and welcome to the Forum :)

It is a difficult time just now with the restrictions on travel etc. and many breeders may be deciding to delay having a litter until things go back to a more normal footing. If you have contacted those breeders listed on the Kennel Club website they may just be slow in getting back to you as I would have thought a reputable breeder would at least reply to a request even if they cannot help.

However, I could suggest that you think of joining the Miniature Schnauzer Club and / or one of the other schnauzer breed clubs which could put you in contact with the mini schnauzer community of breeders and owners and maybe contact the Secretary of the Club to ask if they know of anyone who is planning or has a litter of pups. Many of the best breeders will have waiting lists for their pups often from before they are born so it may be a question of getting to know some breeders within a reasonable travelling distance of your home and see if you can be on a list for a future puppy.

When you contact a breeder, if you are not doing so already, do explain as much as possible about your family and why you want to get a schnauzer and not just asking if they have a puppy available. We have had very brief contacts from some puppy seekers in the past which can be off-putting to a breeder who is passionate about their puppies and may feel the enquiry is no different to someone asking if they have some object or item for sale.

If and when things do start to get back to some kind of normality, do see if you can get along to one or more of the Championship dog shows when the utility breeds are being shown as these are a chance for people to see the dogs and meet their breeders and other schnauzer families and make contacts that may lead to you getting on a waiting list or being offered the chance of a puppy in the future. The Discover Dogs event is another place where you can meet dogs and owners and make useful contacts.

Do have a look through the topics on the Forum Board Index, especially re Puppy Care and Breeding as these will also give some help and information about what to look for from a breeder and how to source a well raised puppy. It is always worth a wait and, if need be, travelling to get a puppy from a good breeder and, if you do get specific recommendations by private message on the Forum or through the Miniature Schnauzer Club or elsewhere, do always check them out fully as you need to know you can trust and are confident in the breeder yourself and not just rely on another's judgement.

Good luck in your search :)
