Hi, Tiki, my 6 year old minitature drags her bottom on the floor every so often. She has done it after being groomed, but now does it more often.any ideas?

Re: Dragging bottom on floor
Hi Kim - there can be a number of different reasons why a dog periodically drags their bottom on the floor. It could be as simple as they just have an itch in that area which can often happen after close grooming of the dog’s rear which may leave it feeling uncomfortable for a day or two. If the ‘scooting’ behaviour is happening very regularly it could be a good idea to have a vet check. Parasites can cause itching and also if there is an anal gland issue but a vet would be the best person to diagnose this.
Dogs who do not have enough fibre in their diet can have this kind of problem which can be helped by simply adding a spoonful of canned unsweetened pumpkin purée to their food. A fresh natural diet of meat and vegetables is ideal to keep a dog’s digestive system working well and preferably raw if that is possible.
Anal gland issues are mostly caused by diet but may be a hereditary problem and can be made worse if a dog has the glands regularly emptied manually by a vet nurse or groomer. This can cause the glands to become painful and even stop working naturally so try to keep your mini on a good diet to avoid this.
