Fun ideas for small spaces indoors on-line course

Post by Cat M »

I have just found this on-line training course with the fabulous Donna Hill. It's for fun games in small spaces, full of good ideas for keeping your dogs entertained and mentally active especially during the winter. Unfortunately today is the last day to sign up! (which I just have :) ) Anyone care to join me? I went for the cheap Bronze level.

Well, we have had great fun doing this course….and we're not even half way through all the course material!
Here's a little video of a few of the things we have been up to.

Sign ups for the next set of courses at Fenzi Dog Sports Academy start 22nd Jan and courses start 1st Feb.
Cabin Fever looks good, it's games based on retrieve, but as Pixie doesn't have a reliable retrieve yet, we are going to sign up for Body Awareness through Targeting. Anyone joining in? :D

So had a quick look on my phone at the website. Loads of courses...which course was this and suitable age???

Lolah moo moo is fully into her adolescence (7 months) and I really need to start getting a much more focussed relationship with her...was thinking foundation agility as it builds your relationship up but lacking in evenings to commit to courses so online sounds fab!

This course was Stir Crazy Games. It's not repeated this time. I initially signed up thinking I'd just do it with Lola (coming up 3) but Pixie (10 months when we started) has also loved it. It has been particularly good for Pixie who is nervous. There was a great lecture on nervous dogs. The truck I got for them to push along makes more noise on the hard floor + I'm thinking of putting keys etc in it so that it makes more of a racket. The dogs learn that they can be in control of the noise. :D
I also learned how to free shape a behaviour during this course. This is great for getting your dog to think more. Both Lola and Pixie astounded me with what they could work out (e.g towel push). I didn't show them how to do it, they worked out what I wanted them to do!
I would say that Lola has gotten further along in most exercises, but Pixie is also in full teenage mode :ymdevil: at present. Have a look at the syllabus and prerequisites tabs. That should help you see what is suitable. But you can work at your own pace. We still have lots of material to get through and work on. You keep your access to course material for at least a year :-bd
If you think you might do agility in the future, the Body Awareness through targeting course would be good. You have time to work on a nose touch if Lolah doesn't have that yet. Let me know if you sign up for anything :-bd

I absolutely love your video! What a clever little dog. It really inspires me to have a go with Ziggy, because I think they do get bored and need stimulating. What do you recommend first?

Hi Cat,

Ive registered!!!!! Shaping is the course I'm doing.....no idea what that is, but i read through most of the courses and felt this was a good starting pint for us but would like to do the course you've just done eventually! I did message Fenzi with my requirements, age and breed of dog and what I wanted out of a course and they too suggested'Shaping'...will keep you posted!!! More concerned about videoing i think!!

Shaping will be super fun for you and Lolah. Basically it gets the dog thinking more and working out what behaviour you want. I free shaped the towel push and truck push in my video. It's amazing to see how between sessions they've obviously been thinking about it and improve and amaze you in the next session.
This time we are 'going for gold' so I'll be practicing videoing before 1st feb so there is less faffing with the iPad and more focus on the girls.
Maybe we can start another thread once the new courses start and support each other + anyone else who wants to sign up?

It think it was small steps today cat after Lolah looking at me completely blankly as to what she was expected to do....must have moved backwards at least 30 times [SMILING FACE WITH OPEN MOUTH][SMILING FACE WITH OPEN MOUTH][SMILING FACE WITH OPEN MOUTH]

I'm hoping not fluke so will try another movement tomorrow (head move probably) ....feeling more motivated now!
