Dieta is ten today
Which she is celebrating by sleeping till I get home.
She's come a long way from the five and a half year old girl who was terrified of nearly everything.
She didn't smell too good when she arrived so got a bath straight away - the smell became rather noticeable on the 7 hour drive home on a hot day...
She was rather better groomed than she's been lately though.
Going visiting the day after she arrived.
Her first ever chew. I had to hold it in her mouth till she got the idea....
This turned out to have been a mistake - that night she ate my wallet, watch strap and a phone case. I had to get some new cards in a hurry as I was off to the US on a course shortly after this.
At first she was the Velcro dog - never more than a few inches from me and always behind me. I remember applause in the park the first time she got more than six feet from me.
After a while she started to take an interest in things - at least things that might be edible.
The day I got her, we stopped off with friends just outside Glasgow for a coffee. Without thinking I put the cup down beside the sofa at which point Dieta decided to see if the mug's contents (strong black coffee) were tasty. Slurp! Decided she didn't like coffee at all. It is the only time I've seen a dog spit. She's never gone near a cup or mug since.
Then she discovered sofas - she stayed with my friends John and Gillian while I was in the US. Dieta seems to think Gillian is her mum.
Dieta discovers forests.
And Westies. We spent ages trying to get a pic of my folks' Westie sitting under Dieta but decided in the end that the only way this was going to happen was if we nailed all eight paws to the floor.
Like most dogs, Dieta isn't keen on baths. Isn't this the Saddest Schnauzer Ever!
Then she escaped
She adores puppies which has always surprised me a bit as she's an ex-breeder. This was on her first Schnauzer Walk.
Her visit to a Giant Camp. To my astonishment we got third place in a competition there. A very distant third behind the first two. Turns out she didn't like tents - which is a bit awkward when you are camping. From her point of view it was a plus that my tent got destroyed by the wind while I was trying to put it up. So we got to sleep in a shed.
When I'd had her about a year and a half she'd made a huge amount of progress from the terrified girl she was. She responded very well to the patients where I work and they to her. Except on one occasion when she got away from me while I was putting her into the car and went charging back towards my office (The person I share it with keeps dog treats in her desk). My office is by a set of stairs. A nurse was escorting a patient down the stairs. If the patient really needed escorting, said nurse really should have been paying more attention. Just as I catch up, patient turns to the nurse and says in an extremely worried tone, "Did I just see a ****ing big black dog go past?", Nurse "No". The patient was very, very relieved when I said that he had seen a ****ing big black dog go by
I decided that since she adored puppies and that the company would be good for her (I work full-time) so I started looking. Emailed a few breeders and was wondering how I was going to save enough to get a giant puppy. When the Swamp Thing came up for rehoming. He was (and is) a furry maniac. Here they are with my late friend Kay's dogs in a Fiat Panda - about 150 kilos of giants and two adults in there. It was an eventful journey as Chester was trying it on with all three of them.
The Swamp Thing has been good for her.
Dieta has found her voice, which I really, really wish she hadn't She used to be the dog that barked once a month. When Chester is going nuts, she does her very talkative mini impression. Just a lot louder.
On another Schnauzer Walk in Edinburgh. Complete with levitating Swampy.
Learning to slurry dive with Swampy!
Here she is passing commentary on her pals at the beach
Happy Birthday Scrounge Hound!

Dieta is ageing. Her pal Harley who is nearly a year older (He'll be 11 in April) is much fuller of bounce.

Re: Dieta is ten today
Belated birthday wishes Dieta, you are indeed a superb specimen of a giant and I'm delighted to have met you on schnauzer walks with Pennie, though it was slightly daunting seeing the size difference between you and an 11 week old mini pup
Here's to continuing good health and more schnauzer walks with you, Donald, Swampy and Harley.
Donald, what a lovely testimonial to both Dieta and your obvious love of dogs. Thank heavens there are people like you in the world
